An Oklahoma man is recovering from injuries sustained when he collided with pigs that ran out into the roadway. As a result of hitting the pigs he was thrown from his bike.

He was hospitalized in the intensive care unit with multiple fractures and internal injuries.

While this is a strange story indeed, my office has represented other motorcyclists who have been involved in accidents in which they struck loose livestock or unattended dogs. In one case, the dog jumped out of the front window of the home, bounded across the front lawn, and attacked the motorcyclist as he passed in front of the house.

There are a couple of statutes which place the onus of liability on the animal owner when some one suffers injuries as a result of an accident involving unattended animals running loose. Most often cases involving these statutes involve pedestrians who are attacked by the animals, but a collision between a relatively unprotected motorcyclist and an animal can have serious consequences indeed, as this story suggests.
