A Rhode Island couple suffered serious injuries when they were involved in a head-on collision. The other driver, a teenager, was talking on his cell phone when he dropped the phone. When he bent over to pick it up, he crossed over the center line, resulting in the crash.
The wife suffered a torn ACL, a tibial plateua fracture, fractured ribs, and other injuries. Her husband suffered a fractured sternum and other injuries.
Cell phones are a real hazard on the road, and while studies are demonstrating just how much they contribute to driver distraction and the occurrence of accidents, drivers seem to pay little heed to the dangers they represent. Even hands-free devices do not significantgly reduce the dangers.
Cell phone usage is a factor that has to be investigated in any otherwise inexplicable accident.
