A recent story by a Dallas TV station highlighted some of the dangers arising from inadequate maintenance of escalators. The story reported that there had been 825 injuries reported on escalators at that airport during the five years before the story ran.
The victims were hurt in various ways, including a mangled hand, a severed knee tendon, back injuries, and other injuries.
Escalator maintenance tends to be the main culprit when an escalator passenger is injured. One expert reviewing the Dallas airport found that the staff there spent only 40% of its time on preventitive maintenance instead of the recommended 70% of their time.
The dangers of escalaltors are well-known to people in the field, as are the steps needed to prevent injuries and accidents. The maintenance company is a party which needs to be identified early on in any case involving an escalator injury.
