Upset that they had not been paid in months and that paychecks were bouncing, the entire staff of certified nursing assistants walked off the job at the Contiental Care Center on Western Avenue in Chicago on Friday.
Certified nursing assistants provide much of the day-to-day care at nursing homes, including the turning and repositioning which is so crucial to the prevention of pressure ulcers.
CNA’s are crucial to ensuring the delivery of needed care for residents. Unfortunately, they are always the lowest-paid providers of health care at any nursing home. Many make less than $10 per hour. The fact that the CNA’s at this facility went unpaid for so long raises serious questions about the overall management of the facility.
